Wind Sounds

Wind gusting and easing, sometimes a low rush, sometimes a soft whistle. Generated live, never looping. On its own, or behind rain, fire or waves.

The sound of wind

Wind itself is silent. What we hear is air moving around obstacles: trees, buildings, the edges of a window. That creates turbulence, a kind of moving, tuned noise whose pitch rises as the wind strengthens. Gusts arrive and fade over a few seconds, giving wind its restless, breathing quality.

Many people find steady wind calming, especially from indoors. It is softer and lower than white noise, and its slow gusts give the mind a gentle rhythm to follow.

How our wind is made

White noise is passed through a resonant filter whose pitch and sharpness follow a slow, random gust pattern. As a gust builds, the sound gets louder and the pitch rises toward a whistle; as it fades, it drops back to a low rush. A little low rumble sits underneath, and the left and right channels are tuned slightly differently so the wind feels like it surrounds you.

When wind works best

  • Falling asleep when you find steady noise boring: wind has gentle movement.
  • Masking variable outside noise, ideally with brown noise underneath for a steady floor.
  • Meditation and breathing: follow each gust in and out.
  • Writing and reading, where it sets a calm, atmospheric mood.

Frequently asked questions

Are wind sounds good for sleep?

Many people like them because they are soft and gently moving. For strong masking of outside noise, add brown or pink noise to fill in between gusts.

Why does the wind whistle sometimes?

As each gust strengthens, the filter that shapes the wind tightens and rises in pitch, just as real wind whistles around edges when it blows harder.

Can I stop the gusts and make it steady?

The gusts are part of the wind sound. For a steady rush, use brown or pink noise with Tone toward Darker instead.
