Why rain is so relaxing

Rain is one of the most popular sleep sounds in the world, and part of the reason is acoustic. Steady rainfall has a broad spectrum close to pink noise, so it masks other sounds well while staying soft. On top of that it carries thousands of tiny, unpredictable details, drops on leaves, a roof, a window, that hold attention lightly without demanding it.

There is also a psychological layer. For most of human history rain meant staying inside, where it was dry and safe. Many people find that the sound of rain from indoors creates a sense of shelter that makes it easier to let go of the day.

How our rain is made

Instead of playing a recording, the generator builds rain from scratch. A bed of filtered pink noise gives the wash of distant rainfall. On top, hundreds of individual drops per second are created at random, each a tiny burst of sound tuned to its own pitch and length, with occasional heavier drops that land with a softer plip. Because every drop is chosen randomly as it plays, the rain never loops, and it has none of the hiss or compression artifacts of a long recording.

Rain sounds for sleep, study and babies

  • Sleep: set the volume low, use the timer or leave it on all night. Rain is easier to tune out than many sounds because it is steady but not monotonous.
  • Study and work: rain covers nearby speech nearly as well as white noise and is far less tiring. Pair it with a 25 or 50 minute timer.
  • Babies and toddlers: rain works well for older babies. Keep the speaker 2 meters from the crib and the volume soft; see white noise for babies.
  • Phones: turn on Keep screen on, or download a 10 minute loop and play it on repeat.

Frequently asked questions

Is rain sound good for sleep?

For many people, yes. Its spectrum is close to pink noise, so it masks disturbing sounds, and its gentle variety makes it easy to listen to. Keep it at a low volume.

Does this rain sound loop?

No. Every drop is generated randomly as it plays, so the rain never repeats. Downloads are seamless loops, crossfaded so you cannot hear the join.

Can I add thunder?

Yes. Tap the Thunder tile to add distant rolling thunder every so often, or choose the Rainy night quick mix.

Is rain better than white noise?

Rain is softer and more natural, which many people prefer for sleep. White noise masks high-pitched sounds such as voices a little more strongly. Mixing both is also an option.
