Thunderstorm Sounds for Sleep

Heavy rain with thunder rolling in the distance every so often. Never the same storm twice, and the thunder stays low and soft so it soothes rather than startles.

Why thunderstorms help people sleep

A thunderstorm heard from a warm bed combines two things that help sleep: a heavy, steady mask of rain, and deep low-frequency rumbles that many people find grounding. The thunder is irregular but slow, arriving every half-minute or so, and fading over several seconds, so it never becomes a rhythm your brain tries to track.

Not everyone loves thunder. If sudden sounds put you on edge, use rain on its own, or keep the Thunder slider low so the rumbles sit beneath the rain.

How the storm is generated

The thunder is synthesized from deep brown noise shaped by a random envelope: a swell lasting a fraction of a second, an occasional sharp crack at the start, then a long rolling decay with a slight flutter, which is what makes real thunder sound like it is moving across the sky. Each strike has its own length and strength, and they arrive at random intervals of roughly 15 to 45 seconds. Between strikes there is a faint distant rumble so the silence never feels empty.

Shape your storm

  • Distant storm: lower Thunder, add more brown noise, and drag Tone toward Darker.
  • Wild night: raise Wind and Thunder, turn on Gentle swell so the whole storm breathes.
  • Storm in a cabin: add the Fireplace tile.
  • Light summer rain: turn Thunder off. See rain sounds.

Thunder and pets or children

Some dogs and young children are frightened by thunder. Gentle, quiet recorded thunder is sometimes used to help pets get used to storms gradually, starting at a very low volume and rewarding calm behavior. If a child or pet seems anxious, keep the storm low, or switch to rain only.
