Why ocean waves calm you down
Waves on a beach arrive every 7 to 13 seconds or so. That is close to the rhythm of slow, relaxed breathing, around five or six breaths a minute, and many people find their breathing naturally falls into step with the surf. Slow breathing at that rate is linked to a calmer heart rate and nervous system.
The sound of each wave also has a shape the ear finds easy: a rising swell, a soft crash and a long fizzing wash as the water runs back. It is predictable enough to relax into, but never exactly the same twice.
How our waves are made
Each wave is generated from a blend of brown and white noise passed through a filter that opens and closes with the wave. As the wave builds, the sound gets louder and brighter; at the break it peaks, with a little high-frequency foam; then it fades and darkens as the water drains back. Every wave gets its own random length and strength, and the left and right channels are offset slightly so the shore feels wide.

| Beach | Quick mix: ocean and wind |
| Stormy sea | Ocean, wind and thunder, Tone darker |
| Deep ocean drift | Ocean with brown noise and Gentle swell |
Use ocean sounds for
- Sleep: the slow rhythm is ideal for winding down. Pair it with a 45 or 60 minute timer.
- Breathing exercises: breathe in as a wave builds and out as it washes away.
- Meditation and yoga: a natural sound that does not demand attention.
- Covering noise: waves vary in volume, so for steady masking add pink noise or brown noise underneath.
Frequently asked questions
Are ocean sounds good for sleep?
Yes for many people. The slow rhythm of the waves encourages slower breathing. Because waves rise and fall in volume, add some brown or pink noise if you also need to mask outside noise.
How fast are the waves?
Each wave lasts about 7 to 13 seconds, chosen at random, which matches the gentle surf of a calm beach.
Can I make the waves sound further away?
Yes. Drag Tone toward Darker, lower the Ocean slider and add a little brown noise. Distance removes high frequencies, so a darker sound feels further away.
